Ethiopia Hosts UN Roundtable to Mobilize Resources for the Second Africa Climate Summit

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia July 9, 2025 Ethiopia today convened a critical UN Roundtable meeting on Resource Mobilization for the 2nd Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) at the UN Conference Centre. Under the theme "Accelerating Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa’s Resilient and Green Development," the event gathered key stakeholders to address the urgent need for climate finance in Africa. The session featured keynote addresses from Dr. Hanan Morsy of UN ECA and Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Ethiopia. In her opening remarks, H.E. Dr. Fitsum Assefa, Minister of Planning and Development, underscored Africa's disproportionate vulnerability to climate change impacts despite contributing less than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Dr. Fitsum cited a significant decline in Sub Saharan Africa's agricultural productivity due to climate change. Minister Fitsum highlighted Ethiopia's proactive climate actions, including the Green Legacy initiative, renewable energy development, and promoting e mobility. She called upon developed countries to triple their commitments for climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity building, urging all stakeholders to invest in Africa’s green transition. The Minister emphasized that the upcoming ACS2 in Addis Ababa will serve as a pivotal platform for forging these crucial commitments and reshaping the global climate architecture. The roundtable included a presentation on the ACS2's vision and structure, followed by in depth discussions. The meeting concluded with a resounding call for robust financial and technical support to ensure a successful and impactful ACS2, with all UN agencies present pledging their full support for the Summit.
